The build, end to end.
From the first tape-measure reading to the final habitation cert. Written for self-builders in the UK and EU.
Phase 2 · Prep
Strip-Out, Rust & Sound Deadening
Take the van back to a bare metal shell, treat any rust, and lay down sound deadener and a vapour break.
Insulation & Vapour Management
Stop condensation and stay warm: a layered system using sheep's wool, recycled PET or PIR – never just spray foam alone.
Phase 3 · Systems
12V Electrical System
Design a safe DC system: battery bank, fuses, BMS, split charger/DC-DC, solar, and proper cable sizing.
230V Mains Hook-Up & RCD
Add a CEE-17 hook-up inlet, RCBO consumer unit, MCB-protected sockets and follow IET LV-CoP.
Fresh Water, Pump & Waste
Install fresh and grey water tanks, a 12V pump with accumulator, John Guest fittings and a winterisable drain.
LPG / Gas System
Cylinder locker, 30mbar regulator, copper run, drop-out vents and a gas-safe sign-off. Do not improvise.
Heating, Ventilation & CO Safety
Diesel or LPG heaters, fan-roof vents, fresh-air inlets, and mandatory CO + LPG alarms.
Phase 4 · Build
Flooring, Walls & Ceiling Cladding
Build a sub-floor, screw ply walls into rivet-nutted ribs, and clad with tongue-and-groove or vinyl.
Cabinetry, Bed & Kitchen
Lightweight torsion-box cabinets, a 12V compressor fridge, a sink and a fixed or convertible bed.
Bathroom & Toilet
Wet-room shower, composting or cassette toilet, and ventilation that keeps mould out.
Windows, Roof Vents & Exterior
Cut and bond Seitz windows, fit a roof fan, awning rail and rear ladder.
